Dogs and cats have been domesticated for thousands of years, but what other species are candidates for this?
I think black bears could actually be considered in this question, they adapt well to co-existing with humans and living off their trash and leftovers as food sources, have generally meeker and more tolerable dispositions compared to their cousins, and can vary strongly in size, so focusing on smaller specimens could breed animals easier to feed and control.

What could you use a black bear for and what would you do if it attacks? Coyotes would be a good choice but when dogs were domesticated it was basically the first second wolves diverged from coyotes. So... you'd be repeating the same thing but the dogs would be shittier because they'd have no purpose. You could use a regular coyote to herd sheep with your collies.

What could you use a black bear for and what would you do if it attacks? To be honest, I was thinking less of the practical applications and more about the possibility of domestication. Although I think that they could serve as some equivalent to catch-dogs or livestock guardians, if I wanted to push it. Maybe even livestock? Domestication could be done in a controlled setting, though; selectively choosing the least aggressive bears and keeping tools in hand to subdue one if it attacks.

Tame pet bears used to be common place. It's not a huge problem, the bigger issue is "what purpose could they actually serve?".
I don't think many people understand how fundamentally tied to the establishment of agriculture our suite of domestic animals are. You don't just capture a wild pokemon and make it into a domestic animal. I mean you can make it into a tame pet, that's actually no problem, but a legitimate domestic animal serves a real purpose in the fundamental operations of human society.

I wouldn't use a bear as a catch dog. ''OMG WE'RE FINALLY GONNA GET THAT 300LB HOG!'' ''Oh shit the hog bit me, fuck!'' *lets go and we die* LGDs are a very specific odd animal with adaptations to look like a sheep and more or less blend in. Also when the bear leads its flock across open mountains if it bothered (which is how LGDs work) it would immediately get mauled by actual LGDs. The ''least aggressive'' traits aren't the issue, you get ''least aggressive'' by raising captive pampered pet bears. Now... how is such a large animal with a needy diet and seasonal hibernation going to work for humans?

I would not say a Black Bear would be a pet, but they could become a potential ally if you provide them enough food.
