Every 4 or 5 years (give or take) I do a sort of survey where I find every piece of evidence of currently working pig dogs in Australia, break them down into the breeds that went into them and basically figure out the most popular breeds used in pig dog crosses. It's like if you pooled all the blood of all the pig dogs together, what percentage of the blood would be which breed.
This time I also made a pie graph of the results-
Results-
ebt (20.75%)
greyhound (18.86 %)
pointer (12.73%)
deerhound (7.54%)
heeler (5.18 %)
Wolfhound (4.71 %)
catahoula (4.24 %)
boxer (2.83 %)
great dane (2.83 %)
bullmastiff (2.35 %)
border collie (2.35 %)
kelpie (1.88%)
coonhound (1.88 %)
ridgeback (0.94%)
BMC (0.94%)
eng mastiff (0.94%)
bloodhound (0.94%)
Apbt (0.94%)
Other* (5.8%)
* all less then 0.9%, breeds included- Foxhound, American Bulldog, Whippet, Koolie, Airedale, Fox Terrier, Jagd Terrier, Patterdale, Jack Russel, weimeraner, Smithfield, Shar Pei.
That rounds out every breed that could be detected among current (2023) evidence of working boar hunting dogs in Australia.
"Heeler" includes blue heeler, red heeler, stumpy tail
"Pointer" includes English pointer, German shorthaired pointer and German wirehaired pointer combined.
"Coonhounds" included bluetick and black and tan
"Collies" were all border collies
Note that results will vary from today to say, next week, using this method. But it should be only very mild differences. Results vary much more over time. It's a shame I have lost all my previous surveys due to boards dying and me being banned and etc. From memory it is notable that the catahoula is definitely rising in popularity. It has never been in the top 10 before. Great danes and bullmastiffs have declined. Pointer has risen also, and this can be chalked up almost entirely to the Bull Arab's popularity growing. Deerhound has risen also, in the past it has been lower than wolfhound, great dane and bullmastiff. The bullstag's surge in popularity would be responsible for this, and in fact the bullstag is now clearly the second most popular mix, after the bull arab. It has leaped over the bully grey, bullwolfhound, O'halloran hound.
The 3rd most popular distinctive pig dog "breed" after the Bull arab and bull stag, "as is", would actually be the catahoula. Then it may even be the heeler, which featured in some crosses but also was well represented as is in pure form. I think the catahoula rise, the heeler resurgence, and also the odd pure pointer and the coonhounds and BMC, all demonstrate an increase in the popularity of hunting with a rifle. Still make no mistake that the bull arab and bullstag are far and away 1 and 2 and there is a big drop to 3rd. it should also be understood that "Random mutts" which are running catch dogs (this includes bull arab crosses and bullstag crosses and wolfhound crosses and boxer crosses and etc etc etc) would remain the true number 1.
1. Assorted mutts which don't perfectly fit a noteworthy cross or breed
2. Bull arabs
3. Bullstags
4. Catahoulas
5. Heelers
It seems ^ that would be be the current top 5 pig dogs. It is definitely the first time bully greys didn't make that list.
It should come as no surprise EBT and greyhound dominate the "DNA pool", because they both feature in 2 and 3, and many also feature in 1. Pointers MOSTLY only feature in bull arabs and bull arab crosses, overwhelming majority of pointer contributions went in through that avenue, but a couple of pure pointers and another dane/pointer cross also were detected.
