Let me ask your opinion on these for one reason. Very controversial for if you have a different opinion about them then everyone is on your ass. I think they are pretty cool-looking and versatile, and are useful for either military or police, or living on ranches herding cattle. Unlike some other opinions stated both in Discord and this thread, the thing about them is they don’t really do well with small livestock. My family has lived on ranches for generations and my Grandaddy had a German Shepherd named Copperfield, and he was a very efficient herding dog for our cattle. Yet he would kill chickens, ducks and goats, and even pigs. Thats talking about me but i’ve seen some other similar incidents.

I'll co-sign the observation that they are quite predatory. I've never actually seen any work as real herding dogs, but those I've seen/heard-about which were farm dogs were very predatory. A friend of mine who lived on a farm had one which would actively hunt and kill and eat birds in the paddocks. A south african farmer I spoke with had a german shepherd that would ambush and kill jackals. I also have seen cases where GSDs went feral.

Feral dogs need independence typically and GSD’s typically do very bad solitarily.

They are one of the more commonly represented dogs among strays and ferals. All over the world. Herding dogs in general do very well, much better than hunting dogs. Behind the primitive/spitz design I'd say herding dogs revert to wild most readily.
