"Yeah I suspect with restrained confidence that male gorillas might be INSANELY underrated. I think chimps and baboons and mandrills are extremely underrated with evidence to prove how stupid underestimating them is. Then a male gorilla is like 5 chimps, basically. But in a battle-tank hulkian package, but people are like "oh yeah, for sure a leopard would beat a gorilla"... huh? I'm not so sure a leopard beats a chimp, I sincerely see very strong evidence that mandrills and alpha male baboons give leopards EVERYTHING they could ask for in a fight, so ... what?! Max silverback Gorilla vs lion or tiger is for me the debate to talk about, and I still don't know" - Hardcastle

Maybe some people think this is a mismatch, but hopefully some 'pro-primate' debaters will have some information.

Also is the Eastern lowland gorilla the best pick? What about the Mountain gorilla? I will do some research.
By the way are my size comparisons just annoying? If they are then I'll stop making them.

I do think lioness is a bridge too far for all but the largest, most experienced silverbacks. Best vs best goes to gorilla but average vs average I'd go lioness. I think a gorilla could fend off a lion or tiger but not win. Gorillas don't thrive in open lion country due to lion prides decimating them. Lions don't do well in forests. This is also why forest leopards get so large, lack of persecution. But a leopard? A gorilla could smash its guts out of its mouth or rip off its appendages or etc. etc. like a king kong scene unless it's a large male freakish leopard.

Size comparisons are always good. Size comparisons, distribution maps and phylogenetic charts are always good.

Agree with Bolushi that "Lioness is a bridge too far for all but the largest, most experienced silverbacks".
However gorillas don't perform "king kong" feats of strength. While I definitely believe the average silverback beats the average leopard, gorillas don't have super-strength and perform super-strength type feats.
Historical primatological estimates of great ape strength were wildly exagerated and has now been revised to something on the order of 1.5-times the average man.
All accounts of gorillas assaulting humans show no evidence of them performing feats of super-strength like tearing us limb from limb. They practically always use their maul to create maximum damage.
If they did have super-strength and could tear us limb-from-limb they'd do that rather than resort to the maul. Their maul is the more powerful weapon because they don't have super-strength.

I was exaggerating there, but you would have a very gnarly murder scene on your hands.

On a p4p basis mandrill and baboon seem more impressive than the wild ape grouping.
