Have any of you ever run into one of these? I have on 2 occasions and I have no wish to repeat the experience.(s) Nothing is quite as dangerous, they will try to kill you if you get near their cubs.
The 1st experience was the worst. About 25 years ago I was riding my mountain bike on the Amiskiwi trail out in Yoho National park. It was in a restricted area due to the high likelihood of wildlife encounters, but that of course did not deter me. Yes, there were the bear warning signs, but to hell with that right?
I'm bombing away at a fast pace when I turned a corner in the forest. Now when a black bear sow senses danger she will slap her cub in the ass and send it up a tree. I come round the corner and I heard a scraping noise. It was a black bear sow coming down a tree very quickly. Up in the tree was her little cub. She had a look in her brown eyes of pure rage and hate.
I slammed on my brakes and turned my bike around, and stood on the pedals to gain speed as she was running after me! I rode like my ass was on fire for 10 minutes straight, not once looking back to see where she was.
I finally ran into some other bikers and told the what happened. We all decided to get the hell out of there.
The 2nd experience was when I was working. I stepped outside to go from one building to another, and I heard a clacking noise. There up in a crab apple tree was a black bear sow with a small cub. She was clacking her jaws and huffing at me. Thank God that she was on the other side of a chain link fence.
I got the maintenance boys to cut he crab apple tree down the very next day.
