Practically every culture throughout the world has a history where they revered some kind of deity or higher power. I think it goes hand-in-hand with our social structures and tribal identity, the need to bow down and worship somebody we view as greater.

We can't explain how and why we got here. So very easy to explain it all away by creating an all powerful sky fairy. And it might not be always possible to control the masses by force. However if "God" says "Thou shalt not" then the great unwashed may be prone to adhere.
So we invented a God/Gods.

Methane hit the nail on the head. I actually think even chimps have some type of watered down cultures and opinions where they're like ''WTF is the world? I think it's all because of the Great Chimp of the Moon'' or whatever. They've been observed doing weird shit that hints towards that idea. There's more comfort and logic to just believe some higher power is responsible for the unexplainable.

I also think it’s because humans as a sentient species need to try to find an answer or rational explanation for everything.
