I've seen C. floridanus beat Odontomachus (in organized fights orchestrated by me) but I think it was brunneus, haematodus is larger and I'm not sure. I'm assuming soldier, by the way, 2 workers = Odontomachus stomp. The soldiers are the actual combat ants. I'd put this at a 50/50. Also @hammerhead now you know where my PFP comes from on CF.

Fascinating, I only knew it as a “trapjaw ant”. Thanks for explaining.

Fascinating, I only knew it as a “trapjaw ant”. Thanks for explaining. There are a few different species worldwide limited to tropical and subtropical areas, so none in Illinois. Some appear to live explicitly in Florida, don't quote me on that. There are 5 Odontomachus sp. that live here. O. brunneus, ruginodus, haematodus, relictus and clarus. Fuck brunneus because one of the fuckers stung me, nothing like solenopsis, pogonomyrmex or pseudomyrmex. The worst ant sting I've gotten was brunneus and also some strange unknown ant. Haematodus might be the biggest here. Brunneus is somewhat small. I've only seen brunneus in person if my identification skills are on point. All follow a similar bauplan, preying on small ants and insects. They'll surround larger targets and snap at them. They can also lock on and sting. Their jaws snap very fast, I expect you know that. Sadly this doesn't bode too well for them in combat, and I've actually seen their jaws work AGAINST them. One of their mandibles falls off. They truly aren't build for a slugfest with larger ants, hence why I favor the carpenter, but I think haematodus has a shot due to size.

I actually liked your original gif pfp of the dog ambushing the bird on the driveway.
