Height: 28-30'' Weight: 60-100lbs Country of Origin: South Africa Family: Sighthound Type: Greyhound The Boergreyhound (also known as the Boerwindhonde) was made by crossing English greyhounds with bulldogs and herders. It is mainly 90% greyhound but some dogs swing different than others and I've seen some that had noticeable bull and herder influence. The herder blood makes it much smarter than the pure English greyhound and some can even pick apart porcupines. They hunt jackal, brown hyena, aardwolf among other predators for pest control and livestock protection. Antelope, warthog, rabbit, bushpig etc. is done as either pest control, food or both. They are also suitable for working cattle - ''Pomma The interesting thing about African animals is that each animal should be handled in a different way. If the dog do not learn quick he is history. Aardwolf, brown hyena, jackal, the dog should go for the throat. Porcupine he should not rush in, wait for his change and grab the head. Warthog, two big Maritsanes can take the ears, but small greyhound will hold it above the tail or on the hind leg. If near the head and he cant hold the ear, he is dead. Small buck and antelope the throat. Big bucks or if you work cattle, the nose. Baboon, the dog should circle , go in one bite on throat and get out of his way, circle again, go in and out again....ware him down and try to rip out his air pipe ( open up his throat). If he just go in the baboon will rip him in pieces with his hands and legs. Very difficult to learn. Bully's normally get killed...you need very intelligent dog that is not afraid. Once you have a dog that can catch anything, money can not buy him... Cheers David'' www.ozziedoggers.com.au/forum/index.php?/topic/816-more-dogs/

South Africa's Wolfhounds -
MaritsaneHeight: 27-30" Weight: 75-110lbs Country of Origin: South Africa Family: Sighthound Type: Wolfhound Greyhound-type Boergreyhounds aren't powerful enough to be 100% viable all the time. A dog is/was necessary to increase hunting success rates and minimize injury. To get this they created a "wolfhound" variant of Boergreyhounds, and they are the dogs responsible for most brown hyena, large antelope and warthog killing. They're known as the Maritsane lineage of Boergreyhound. They generally hunt in pairs, and in conjunction with greyhound-type Boergreyhounds. These dogs vary from the regular Boergreyhounds in that they are 50% greyhound and 50% deerhound/bull breed. They are considerably larger, more powerful, more committed bite and grip. However, they aren't as fast and will miss some jackal and small antelope at times. They're also favored for working cattle and even catching and holding cattle when needed. Crosses between the Boergreyhound and Maritsane are used to get some Maritsane power while being as close as possible to greyhound speed -
Steekhar Boerwindhonde - Height: 27-30" Weight: 75-110lbs Country of Origin: South Africa Family: Sighthound Type: Wolfhound Similar to the Maritsane but sometimes bulkier, presumably a little more bull breed/deerhound influence. The Steekhar is used for the same purposes as the Maritsane in rural South Africa. Those look great. I think even "maritsane" is just like one guy's lineage, to me these seem to be another guy's lineage but basically maritsane and these "Steekhars" I'd consider the same thing.
