Black Wildebeest (White-tailed Gnu) - Connochaetes gnou
The black wildebeest or white-tailed gnu (Connochaetes gnou Zimmermann.) is the smaller of two wildebeest species. These are members of the cattle family and form herds on grassy plains. The natural populations of black wildebeest, endemic to the southern part of Africa, were hunted for their leather to near extinction by the settlers, but have now rebounded. It has a stocky frame with a dark brown coat that is shorter during the summer months, a stiff neck mane and a greyish tail. On its muzzle and under its jaw it has black bristly hair. It also has long, dark-coloured hair between its forelegs and under its belly. It has a pair of stout horns which are broad and close together at the base, sweep forward in a curve and rise to sharp tips. It has scent glands in front of its eyes, under its hair tufts and on its forefeet. Bulls are heavier and darker than the cows with heavier more powerful horns. The black wildebeest is typically between 170–197 cm (67–77 in) in head-and-body length, and the average weight is 120 - 200 kg (265 - 440 lbs.)
Mountain Gorilla - Gorilla beringei beringei
The eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) is a species of the genus Gorilla and the largest living primate. At present, the species is subdivided into two subspecies. The eastern lowland gorilla (G. b. graueri) is the most populous, at about 5,000 individuals. The mountain gorilla (G. b. beringei) has only about 700 individuals. The eastern gorilla is a large hominid with a large head, broad chest, and long arms. It has a flat nose with large nostrils. The face, hands, feet and breast are bald. The fur is mainly black, but adult males have a silvery "saddle" on their back. When the gorilla gets older, the entire fur becomes grayish, much like the gray hair of elderly people. This is why the older males are sometimes called Silverbacks. The eastern lowland gorilla has a shorter, thicker, deep black fur, while the mountain gorilla has a more bluish color. The mountain gorilla is slightly smaller and lighter than the eastern lowland gorilla, but still slightly larger than the western lowland gorilla. Males are much larger than females. A full-grown adult male Mountain gorilla weighs an average of 159 kg (350 lb) and stands 1.7 m (5.6 ft) upright and a female typically weighs 90-100 kg (200-220 lb) and stands 1.4 m (4.6 ft).
