There is a website where you can view animal skulls in 360° and see information about them and they have this Cane Corso skull that weighs a whopping 890 g and is by far the largest dog skull I've found there even though they have a large collection of dog skulls including from massive breeds. Are their skulls really this large or is this a freak specimen? How large would this dog have been while alive? skullbase.info/skulls/dogs/cane_corso_male.php

skullbase.info/skulls/mammals/spotted_hyena.phpskullbase.info/skulls/mammals/gray_wolf.phpSome large wild predators for comparison. That is one monstrous skull, bigger than the Central Asian Shepherd and spotted hyena skull. It's wider than the gray wolf skull. It should be the same size as American Bulldog skulls and its fellow bulldogs, but for some reason its head is just huge. They do have a tendency for big heads in the breed, but I didn't know they were that big. Must be one of those big pet dogs.

I've always had a problem with the skull size topic, and how they'd generalise and say things like "wolves have larger skulls than dogs", because I'd think "which dog are they talking about?" and not just which breed, but which individual dog? There is so much variation I don't understand how any such generalisation is possible. Basically I'm not surprised. I don't think it's a "Cane Corso" specific thing, I think if you looked around enough you'd find such individuals in many breeds.
It was likely an especially huge Corso, probably a pet one that is too big to work. I've seen some that are up to 180 lbs even though the breed should really be 100 lbs or less.
