The gharial cannot damage the bear. It's a fish eater. Is there any evidence of gharials taking medium-large game? I like gharials but this is too tall an order IMO, they aren't fighters.

On second thought, this might have been a mismatch. Bear should take this even in the water with some superficial injuries. Maybe in deep water it would be a stalemate.
I’m not aware of gharials eating anything larger than turtles.

Indian Gharial still have strong and deadly jaws - teeth like toothpicks, they puncture the bear underwater.
70/30 for ABB on land.

There are accounts of American black bears killing alligators. They might be less agile than cats but are more durable and have better grappling skills. The gharial seems to have narrower jaws compared to American alligators, caimans, and crocodiles.

Interesting, can you post them? I thought ABBs and alligators just stayed out of each other's way.

Big Bons, a well respected bear poster said there are two accounts where it when badly for the alligator.

I would favour a gator over a black bear certainly but I changed my mind; Black bear wins in shallow water and on land, while gharial wins in deep water.
