Height: 24-26" Weight: 65-90lbs Country of Origin: Rhodesia, South Africa Family: Cur The Rhodesian Ridgeback (or just Ridgeback) is a mongrel hunting dog from South Africa. When Europeans brought their boarhounds to Africa, they hybridized with native African dogs, which gave them the ridge. They later got crossed to various scenthounds, losing their boarhound nerve and instead becoming a rough cur. A more versatile animal more suitable to African conditions. They've been used to find, course and kill large antelope such as Hartebeest, historically. Likely a little bit in modern times too, it is known Boergreyhound x Ridgeback crosses are used for that purpose today but pure Ridgebacks are rare. They are also used to track and retrieve animals, mostly in the Americas - They are also used to bail hogs - Ridgebacks can also be used to catch hogs, but when they're young if you want them to do some catching, you run them with catch dogs. If you want them to be a bailer, you run them with bailers. They will take to either, but will never be a fully hard catch dog. They will catch a hog up to a certain weight, and then bail. And if they get whooped, they probably aren't going to be coming back for more. So it's quite common to see Ridgebacks being crossed with other breeds with catching nerve, Ridgeback doesn't effect the dog's lugging ability and also gives some positive traits, e.g. a good nose and stamina. They're a common breed used to un-ruin ruined breeds. They're good cattle dogs, a big help to farmers - General pest control is not beyond Ridgebacks either - Source - www.facebook.com/Teylaridgeback
