Yep, thats a good one. Looks not unlike a working boar dog right? When you break dogs down to real functional applications, "mastiff" isn't really a thing. The breeds we call mastiffs were a few different things; Bulldogs, boarhounds and LGDs. Some breeds may even originate from a hybrid of boarhound and bulldog (bullmastiff - created as a poacher hunting dog) or even a hybrid of boarhound and LGD (St Bernard - a draught dog originally, converted into a search and rescue), but there's not really such a thing as a "mastiff" where its just a big clumsy heavy oaf that apparently is vaguely considered a "guard dog". That's actually just bullcrap and has encouraged the ruination of these breeds which SHOULD be able to lug a bull and/or a boar (or guard livestock). If they don't have a build that would facilitate that activity, they have strayed from their true path. |

The real one and only English mastiff, what a downfall this breed experienced... I'd say top 2 worst downfalls ever, Neapolitan mastiff still takes the cake for the no 1 View AttachmentEven that, though a nice enough healthy looking dog, is actually already well and truly far removed from what the English mastiff originally was. Even this was a non-working pet, but closer in form to the ancestral dog and what the english mastiff is actually supposed to be -  All English mastiffs today descend from this dog, and this dog descends directly from the individual dog who defended Sir Piers Legh at the battle of Agincourt in 1415. That act is what motivated Lyme Hall to preserve the lineage, and the English Mastiff was created by that endeavour. This painting is what a "ruined pet" English mastiff SHOULD look like, what they have become? I don't even know what that is supposed to be. But it is a very pointless animal. I can tell from this animal with the children that it is a retired boarhound, similar to the great dane. That is what the english mastiff was supposed to be. Here is the equivalent "iconic grandfather" of the bullmastiff breed-  Thorneywood Terror, one of the last gameskeeper's night dogs, and the foundation for the Bullmastiff breed. He was notorious for being freakishly gigantic at 100 lbs. The iconic grandfather of the Dogue De Bordeaux-  Champion of the Pyrenees, Caporal. Also famous for being a gigantic freak at 105 lbs. Basically these mastiff breeds we have now are really all bullshit, except for perhaps the Alano Espanol. The key difference there is the traditional work survived. Most of the others are fabricated mutants that "pay homage" to a historical lineage/application of working dogs that sadly died out. Do you think modern Harlequin Great Danes are analogous to the retired English Mastiffs at Lyme Hall? |

I recall reading Lycaon saying he posted on CF pictures of boar skulls with bite marks to the bone done by dogo argentinos, is that true? By chance can anyone share them?

He did, but they don't show anymore. You can see the little picture icons but there's nothing. Pictures wither away with time sometimes, unfortunately. I've seen packs of catch dogs in Argentina kill hogs outright on video (and you saw it, right?), probably in the same way. |

I somehow forgot about that pic from Lycaon but remember a similar one from way back where the boars skull was actually fractured and punctured by a dogo.
Likely a big collision at high speed, I would guess. My dad recently showed me on his Facebook (I don't have facebook and he couldn't send a share to me for some reason) a dog and boar colliding so hard I wouldn't be surprised if the boar got a skull fracture (and the dog got smashed in the collision as well, but got up and secured the lug afterwards).

Yeah, any coloured Dane. Great Danes in general kind of stayed truer to the ancestral dog that both were. It was a dog that had a distribution across a lot of Europe. EMs and Danes both descend from it but the EM got more wackily changed (and even the Dane changed too much, but there are levels).
This is also true for english bulldog and boxer.

Dale please read my private message, I'm starting to get mad for real because I wanted to get back to a few threads back where we talked about leopard aggressive behaviour and that would have been quite easy to do if this board wasn't suddenly DERAILED and spammed by the creation of like 200 useless matchups that are detailing like fking pestilence. And you know who created them.

Not sure why. Maybe he will come back to check in at some point, like myself with "domain of the bear" or "molosserdogs", every 2 months I'm like "oh yeah..." and go look. So... lycaon < that should make sure he sees this. |

I don't want to be annoying, we're not a group of annoying assholes forcing someone to post on the board and I don't want it to appear that way since it'd make him shy away more. |
