How do you keep a gar? Can you keep one in an aquarium? How about the alligator gar?

You'd have to have a really really big aquarium with nothing else in it, and then you'd still have to toss it in the river when it got too big because even your big aquarium won't be big enough. I'd look towards smaller alternatives. Like the pike topminnow- Still a psycho that will eat stuff, but only small stuff. The best aquariums have a bit of variety and plants and etc IMO. The biggest fish I had was a black ghost knife that was about a foot long (not mine) It would eat the odd zebra danio or shrimp or whatever, but was pretty chill. Even so I'd probably stick to smaller fish only if I went again (which I'd like to). Golden Panchax, clown loaches, danios, shrimp and snails (all of which I had before) would be a cool combo.

I do recommend starting off with the shortnose gar. It’s like the alligator gar but smaller. Although, due to your location, you may need to go with the aptly named Florida gar.

Plants can be very aesthetically pleasing. The boy should aim for something exotic as he’s in Florida where there’s literally everything. Seminole killifish could make good forage.

Plants make it way easier to take care of too. If you have abundant plants growing the need to change water is pretty minimal, but if you don't you have to do it constantly and let me tell you it is a very annoying pain in the ass. Siphening water and fish shit out of your tank into a bucket and then mixing up the right water (with conditioning chemicals) at the right temperature to put new water in. Plants (still working together with a filter as well) can make the system much more self-maintaining.

I’ve only kept the most basic fish; goldfish (albeit a couple fancy ones) and bettas/Siamese fighting fish. I once caught a couple of bluegill and kept them in the tank overnight with the goldfish before releasing them the next day. Maybe Bolushi could keep a bullhead due to their hardiness.
