The Native American with the tamed wolf gives me questions. Go on. I find it interesting how these early wolves looked. They looked like pariah dogs, except with way more fur and upturned ears, and maybe a bit taller. Whereas now pariah dogs are floppy-eared and their fur is dependent on where they are at and what their genetics are.

I'd say that's likely a wolf dog, and shouldn't be thought of as being common place pre-european colonisation. In the late 1800s early 1900s white guys were messing around with wolf dogs as well, and this indian likely acquired one of those. The real dogs that natives had before Europeans would have been much smaller pariahs. Wolf-dogs wouldn't have been a thing, or I should say much more likely to end up wild animals than be the pets of natives. The wild wolf population in north america has dog DNA, native american dogs actually don't have recent wolf DNA. They've speculated they would and tested it time and time again, looking for independent wolf-domestication that occurred in north america, and it just didn't. All the dogs in America descend from eurasian wolves.

All the dogs in America descend from eurasian wolves. To be fair, you’re right that it shouldn’t say this is where wolves were domesticated. But I will still say that Native Americans did have a preference for “wolfy looking” domestic dogs as opposed to the standard domestic dog. Thats why many dogs, like the Native American Indian Dog and Carolina Dog ended up looking extremely similar to wolves.

I personally think "the native american indian dog" is a scam, modern white people breeding dogs to look like wolves (maybe using wolf admixture) to represent the idea of native americans living with tame wolves. An idea they find romantic/appealing. I'm sure DNA testing would prove these are mutts mixed up probably in the 1990s or something- I don't think it's real. I think there were two waves of dog into the americas, the carolina dog is the best representative of what the first dog in america was- They would have come over around 14 000 years ago with the first people. Then around 9000 years ago sled-pulling spitz came over. The carolina dog spread all around north america and south america, and some strains even mutated in the meso-american civilisations into things like the Xoloitzcuintle As well as various other dogs which are mostly extinct. Basically I don't believe native americans had "wolf like" dogs.
