"Baloo is a main fictional character featured in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book from 1894 and The Second Jungle Book from 1895. Baloo, a sloth bear, is the strict teacher of the cubs of the Seeonee wolf pack. His most challenging pupil is the "man-cub" Mowgli."

Is stated to be a sloth bear, but appears more like an American black bear in behaviour.

Yeah, but it seems easier picturing Baloo as an American Black Bear since that ursid is used in the live action Jungle Book movies from the 1990s.

Always seemed like a black bear, but with the Jungle Book set in Madhya Pradesh, India, it can only be a sloth bear.

However, as Hardcastle pointed out, Jungle Book was made in the habitat of the sloth bears. In the lastest film, Baloo was a kodiak size Himalayan brown bear.

Technically by location, but you did say represents Baloo. This could mean personality and appearance. Since the experts were getting confused by the bear species, that could mean anything. Baloo is also drawn more like a brown or black bear than a sloth bear. It is possible that Kipling and the illustrator may have combined multiple bear traits for Baloo. So, it would be easier to give a more general bear species for Baloo rather than the strange looking sloth bear. I guess a brown or black bear for the broad description of baloo, a sloth bear based on location, and an American black bear due to a high tolerance for humans. Also, it is funny when people mistake an American black bear for the Himalayan cousin.

/\ That is right. The Himalayan looks a bit more ‘lion’ like and has the v mark on its neck. The Himalayan brown bear is the only brown bear subspecies that gets dominated by a black bear in the same area.

Another version of Baloo, the kodiak size Himalayan brown (red) bear.

I am still undecided which bear to vote for. The original cartoon said Baloo represents a sloth bear and he does have the claws of one despite being a playful dancer but not the temperament.
