I heard one is a scenthound and one is a cur. No idea.

There's the Catahoula and the American leopard hound. The Catahoula is a cur from Louisiana and leopard hound is a coonhound from Carolina with similar coloration to a catahoula.
I don't think you're alone in being confused, it seems kennel clubs have been confused in the past and hunters themselves even get confused. Lots of web pages online are also confused.
As such I'd speculate they've been crossed back and forth at times in their respective histories, with many hillbillies assuming they're the same thing.
My hunch is the Catahoula is a cur with an American lion hound foundation, hence the colour similarity. But I also think the American lion hound has since had Catahoula crossed back into, it's on the larger and tougher side of coonhounds likely for this reason.
I myself am not entirely un-confused, this is just the best I can make out.
