Same old story. Bred for nothing, bred to be an ornamental accessory. No functionality factored into your breeding, you deteriorate. "Responsible" breeding practices and "moderate" conformation standards can stem the bleeding somewhat, and pugs are an example of a breed that had neither of those, so they're especially screwed. But even the most responsible breeding and the most sensible conformation standard still is gonna be struggling with this issue of deterioration if there is no work for the dogs to prove themselves in.
