I'd argue the golden jackal is actually a couple tiers above the red fox, despite the red fox being one of my favourite wild animals. A slightly more interesting matchup may have been a large red fox with one of the lupulella jackals (black backed or side striped). The golden jackal is basically comparable to a coyote (though doesn't get as big as big coyotes). I think the lupulella jackals are somewhat intermediate between canis jackals and the red fox. Still would go jackal, and that's a jackal that is lesser than a golden jackal. Mind you, the red fox has attained some surprisingly high weights comparable to all of the above (excluding coyote), I just think even so it's design is relatively delicate and fragile and it won't be able to trade with any jackal.
