IMO a good Airedale beats out any retriever at everything besides laying around doing nothing.

Retrievers are among the dog types that least interest me.
Retrievers, scenthounds, livestock guardians, continental herders, toy breeds would probably be my bottom 5.
Even the other gun dogs - spaniels, setters, pointers, for me are more interesting, and the versatile gun dogs like Weimaraner, Vizsla and Dalmatian are also.
Retrievers achieve a rare level of apathy from me.

I know continental herders are predatory, I can't put my finger on why I don't like them, really. They just don't "move" me for some reason, and neither do retrievers, or livestock guardians. There may be a rational explanation in there somewhere or it might be irrational. I think it's different for each.
Scenthounds actually probably don't belong when I put more thought into it. I do like them, just get frustrated sometimes with how wussy they are.
Retrievers are just extra "meh" to me.

Actually it's a common theme that people who hate tough dogs love retrievers. Taipan looooved retrievers, which is possibly subconsciously part of the reason I dislike them. Joe Rogan also, terrified of any kind of dangerous animal to a silly degree but loves golden retrievers. It's odd to me to value something specifically for how harmless it is. To be that influenced by fear. I think it's actually sad when an animal is totally harmless. That doesn't make me happy, I pity the animal. |

To be fair, the golden retriever was a popular dog in my neighborhood as well as my city. I guess for me it might be a familiarity issue more than wanting a harmless furry friend. I like pointer dogs and border collies. I also like certain spitz breeds. I wish to see a greyhound's speed with my naked eye. I do think a rat terrier would be useful in a dirty, rundown area. Last but not least, the foxhounds have some great asthetics, or they seem to be visually appealing imho. |
