Don't want to be a debbie downer but I think part of the reason why its hard for AVA forums to fledge is because while Taipan has a bad habit of banning people for no reason, some of them are justified and those dregs often go to the alternatives. I think the recent debacle illustrates that issue. Hopefully CF's influence declines though. There's definitely some truth to that. Waw I think best demonstrates that. Carnivora is dominated by mediocre dumb nerds, with most(most) outspoken independent thinkers eventually inevitably running afoul of Taipan, BUT when I saw WAW I was like "oh ok, there's also an element of totally deranged insane people kept away from carnivora". Carnivora is just kept steady in the doldrums of mediocrity, mostly by newcomers and boring people and then the odd one or two good people who can do gymnastics and stay low key enough to get by. The number of great people carnivora has lost though is still unbelievably criminal, truly ... Not to be too dramatic, but actually crippling humanity's level of animal knowledge. There was a special kind of deep knowledge being discovered by healthy thriving Ava forums which the scientific community wasn't even skewed towards investigating, kind of like the art of the naturalist which had thrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s and kind of died out was reinvigorated and continued by Ava forums for a while and I think really good stuff was being uncovered and understood and then taipan's mental illness choked it out.

Read chui's post on CF. I have no problems with them, but lord I am so baffled by the rivalry between big cat lovers.
I have no idea why some of them will idolize one type of cat and then bash another. With the exception of the cheetah, most of the big cats have the same body type if you remove the skin. There are few differences, jaguars are stocky, more aquatic, and have robust teeth, lions have manes and are social, leopards are great at climbing, but if you scaled them to the same size they are all roughly equally good fighters. Hell, even the cougar which isn't even pantherine is pretty damn similar to leopards and fills the same ecological role.
In fairness, I have seen a few crocodile guys bash caimans and alligators, so cat people aren't the only people that do it, but the cat people take it to another level.

Well dog people definitely do it, myself included, HOWEVER I would argue dog types are sometimes so fundamentally different, even polar opposites from one another, that it doesn't have the same irrationality of tiger fans and lion fans or puma fans and leopard fans going at eachother (for example). That is actually funny, because they are realistically so the same and you can get likes from puma fans for shitting on leopards or vice versa, even if the criticism is totally equally valid for both cats. The dog equivalent to that would be cane corso fans shitting on presa canarios, THAT is stupid. Some people do that too. I ONLY do something kind of like that when talking about recent breeding practices of certain breeds, while always noting they USED to be the same thing 100 years ago and are supposed to be the same thing.

Sure dog, people due it to but like you said, they have the most diverse phenotypes out there.
A pitbull, greyhound, great, dane, and a chihuahua may be the same species but they have vastly different builds.
If you skin a tiger and lion, most people, even experts, have a hard time telling them apart.

Convergent evolution is also a thing. Most modern cats rely on the same basic strategy. Burst of speed, wrestle, bite the throat/head. A few differences here and there but in the end evolution produces a similar body plan.

Sure dog, people due it to but like you said, they have the most diverse phenotypes out there. A pitbull, greyhound, great, dane, and a chihuahua may be the same species but they have vastly different builds. And also, totally different brains/instincts/drives. Yeah they differ a huge amount, despite being genetically close. Wild canines don't differ much. Especially when you talk about wolves, coyotes and jackals. They are all kind of just different sizes of the same basic animal in many ways. Cats as well. The big distinction can be divided into 3 - small game specialists (those who prey predominantly on animals around <1-5kgs), big game specialists (prey on animals 1+x their own size) and cheetahs, who are their own thing. That is kind of it, and then it is just different sizes and colours. Smilodons were another different thing. Wild canine basic designs could be divided into foxes, jackals (which actually includes wolves as just a mega jackal IMO - which I understand causes pause and confused faces, but I can go very very deep into it if need be) and hyper-social hunting dogs (dholes, awds, bush dogs). Then I guess racoon dog and maned wolves are distinct enough to perhaps get their own categories. With domestic dogs, even if you go "loose" with very broad categories, they are still always at least 10 or so totally different animals with really really big differences in how they think and behave and are built, what their niche and application is. Pariahs and spitz breeds Herding dogs Sighthounds Scenthounds Retrievers Spaniels Pointers and setters Gripping dogs Livestock guardians Terriers Toy breeds I don't think it would be possible to go more "broad" than that, and this is being very very generously loose, in fact much looser than I was being when I divided cats into 3.

What is a manul? As long as it is a wild animal and not domestic, yes.

Looks like Komododo is fighting the felid fans, but this time on the behalf of wolverines.
Also I hear that Peter from Wildfact is the worst Admin of any animal related forum.

Are you sure you don't just hate his stinking guts? lol (I don't know him at all, I don't know if I have even glanced at a post, I truly have zero opinion).

It also looks like AE is back on carnivora. carnivora.net/ocelot-v-wolverine-t4592.htmlcarnivora.net/clouded-leopard-v-wolverine-t4005-s780.htmlI heard from some former posters that Peter permabans people without any warning. As in if they even make one post that is related drama from a separate forum, he just kicks them out. Even Taipan gives temp bans or initial warnings.

As in if they even make one post that is related drama from a separate forum, he just kicks them out. Even Taipan gives temp bans or initial warnings. AE back on carnivora is Hammerhead's fault. He begged taipan again and Taipan decided to run a poll, no doubt knowing no one would vote to let hammerhead return, but annoyingly he tossed AE into the mix since they are like a weird package. These idiots don't know AE well enough to give a shit about him, he's a boring non-event unless you dig into his sick perverse psychology. They just knew they wanted HH out. It seems more reasonable to say "he can come back, but definitely not him", so that vote won out- I could have perhaps said "good for him", but the first thing he did was go there and repeat debunked (to his face, and he knows) arguments against the vindolanda dog study. So, for that reason I just have to hatch a new plan to destroy AE, same as the last one I kickstarted in June 30th which worked perfectly- Sabotaging Hammerhead's attempt to get back in CF, and getting AE bannedThe next one will work perfectly as well, only the punishment will be more severe.
