Not necessarily. Depends. If they have an intelligent argument they punctuate with sources that could make them a formidable force (reddhole springs to mind), but others might just provide sources for their dumb argument which don't even really support their point and they could be a total moron. I personally never liked using them. Never comes naturally. Is always a burden to track down my sources after the fact. I am a source. I've absorbed a lifetime of observations which I've obsessively analysed with my high IQ and that's what I bring to the table. I didn't keep track of my sources, it's just not how I operate. I understand this isn't ideal when debating with people who are motivated to scrutinise and pick at any chink (heh) in your armour, and I've had to adapt and become extra persuasive with my debating style. We all have weaknesses and that would be one of mine. I acknowledge it is a weakness, but it is what it is. It would be awkward if I had science nerd abilities on top of everything else. I'd be too OP. I also btw see it as limiting to be held back by a need to wait until you find the right source before moving forward with conclusions and on to the next point. I make observations and move quickly. Source slaves end up way behind trudging along slowly. The flipside can be mistakes I need to come back and acknowledge and correct. That's fine. Opinion-based arguments can move along much faster than strictly fact-based arguments IMO. "Opinion based" doesn't really do justice to what I mean. It's observation and analysis based. There are plenty of facts that went into it, all the facts, now we're just giving our logical analysis of the facts. That's the debating I like. When someone asks you to go find the facts... Sometimes it's fair enough, I do it sometimes, sometimes it might not be a well known fact, but other times it's like "ugh just keep up asshole, how do you still not know that? I can't be bothered, find it yourself". Depends. But yeah digging up the sources doesn't impress me, it's the age of the internet, it's not like you thumbed through the microfiche up a ladder in the bowels of some library in London, who cares, I want your analysis and your logically reasoned argument based on the stuff we basically all know at this point. I've realised the real reason people say "post proof" is actually usually because they're losing the argument, and it's like an eject button where they save face. A way to stop the debate and sort of look like you won even though clearly you didn't.

I barely ever follow Carnivora but some of those names I'm a little familiar with. Shin is the kung fu guy right? I can't put someone into the Smart category who studies MAs intensily for years and still manages to not understand the very basic realities of MAs, self-defense and combat sports and still buys into "the myth". And he was fairly terrible on the uptake when it came to dogs vs cats iirc.
Taipan I thought had quite a decent general knowledge but was fairly slow when you compare his knowledge-base to his interpretative and perceptive abilities. On balance not poor perceptive abilities, but for how much information he's been exposed to I find him around average.
Chui, forget it, S-category right up there among a very select and special few. You can't just plonk Chui in the middle of that Smart category inbetween most of those other "Smart"/dumb members.
Here's my tier list of the people I feel familiar enough with to grade:
S : Chui S-: Dale Earnfart A : Brogan, Lycaon, Vita A-: Taipan B : Black Ice, Bolushi
Yeah some others I recognize but forget a little too much to confidently grade them. I'm by far the biggest casual in this neck of the woods, it's normally a matter of years between my visits to Carnivora.
Bolushi will be in the A category with Brogan, Lycaon and Vita in 3 years time.
I could put Chui S+ and Earnfart S. Earnfart is definitely every bit of Special. I get the sense there's a big age gap between them two.

That was a pretty telling argument when we talked about human combat. It was funny because a cat guy, who for some reason had canine or k9 or something like that in his name, but dedicated his life to shitting on dogs (why do people do that? There's a lot of them) he actually did incidentally know a bit about human combat and you could almost see the blood drain out of his face when he realised his cat allies (shin and eyeofthejag) were totally absolutely frigging clueless when it came to the fundamentals of fighting. That was fun. Even he was like "no dale is definitely right here, wtf".

Yeah every word you wrote on human combat and how it relates to interspecifics was smack bang on the mark as far as I'm concerned, and excellently conveyed. You have far more patience than I'd have with that lot. Good for readers like me that you do.

I just quickly noticed he was very very very smart. I'm glad he decided not to fight me and we mostly just found common ground.

In what I read Chui never had a problem with anything you said apart from one technicality to do with hunting dogs, just forget details. But he was basically a full supporter from what I saw.

Massive difference in maturity, but sadly Dale is nearly 40 and shows no sign of maturing. I suspect Chui could well be a similar age, possibly younger.

You have matured into immaturity. Grow up, Dale... I blame you. Don't worry, with me in charge I'll diligently ensure your hatred for East Asians and Indians never goes away. No maturing for you.
