The idea Eurasian wolves are an inferior variant of wolf, like "Kangals only beat Eurasian wolves, the big ones in Alaska would shred that dog!" or whatever, is clearly false. I already knew it wasn't true and the weights being eerily close with North American wolves just verify what was always true in my mind.

Except these weights don't match up with anything in literature or even the weights dirus posted in geographically similar areas.

It depends on how the measurements were taken. I asked dirus for the source of these measurements. If they were legitimately empty stomach weights then yes my assumptions would be wrong but i doubt it

Irrelavent to Eurasian Wolves but reminds me many people love to say “the timber wolves here before were small and coyote-like, the ones in Alaska now kill cattle and our native elk and moose and children and for sport! eradicate them!” When if you look at photos of the old Timber wolves you see a resemblance right away.

My assumptions were right, these measurements were not an average but merely measurements taken of 17 of the largest wolves out of 400 wolves over 20 years as well as 3 smaller ones. these wolves probably still overlap with northwestern wolves in weight, but the average is absolutely not 120 pounds. Especially since these measurements are probably not empty stomach archive.org/details/mammalsofsov211998gept/page/174/mode/2up?view=theater

also the normal guy compiled a list of wolf weights and im partially convinced the yellowstone male wolf weight of 120 pounds is partially cherrypicked. Will dig in, especially given the official average is 110 pounds. Edit: Never mind, the normal guy only included weights of wolves older than 2 years. Still suspicious

I recall reading something that suggested eurasian wolves were shorter but more robust than american wolves on average. Dunno. Read something similar about arctic wolves as well.
But still I definitely think most of the giant weights that come out of russia and eastern europe are bullshit. I think the actual scientific research on wolves from these areas still gave lower averages than pacific northwest wolves, so the idea that 96 and 100 kg wolves are popping up over there seems like bullshit.
I still think wolves max out around 65 kgs for rare individuals. Some may have been weighed heavier with meat in their stomachs.

this vid gotta be fake right? No. Why? The wolf looks huge! Just compared to the trees. Definetely larger than the average 170 pound american.

The wolf looks huge! Just compared to the trees. Definetely larger than the average 170 pound american. That's just it though. Wolves ARE huge, we know they are extremely huge. 36 inches at the shoulder (sometimes even more) and 6 and a half feet long. They are freakishly huge. However, they are also weirdly light.

I already knew it wasn't true and the weights being eerily close with North American wolves just verify what was always true in my mind. Right and wrong. The ones in Alaska they’re talking about are the ones that tackle elk and ranch bison, and are hated by ranchers. Because of this, they’re seen as way more scary than a Eurasian wolf due to this. Its just less heard of there. In North America you will always hear monthly about “this wolf pack in x state killed my cows!” because thats what gets headlines. But yes, the two wolves are not that different. Mackenzie/Northwestern wolves are about my favorite wolves but not because they’re better than Eurasian wolves.
