Saw a guy on a hunting site claiming that Scandinavian hunters are at the forefront of breeding the best hunting dogs in the world and have the strongest hunting dog traditions and culture, and found it odd because they'd probably be among the absolute last countries I'd consider. Maybe he knows something I don't, though.
Got me thinking, what would you guys say are the leading countries for breeding working dogs? I guess we can do different categories. Hunting dogs, herding dogs, livestock guardians, pp/attack dogs. Maybe even divide hunting further into the different categories, etc.
Obviously I'm biased for Australia and pig dogging but think it would be interesting to give "flowers" to other good dogging countries/cultures as well.
I'm gonna think about it for a while.

Honestly I think USA and Australia for hunting. Canada is absolutely shit. Shit laws for hunting with dogs. Also has less workable quarry than in the states. In USA you have racoon, badger, coyote, wild boar, fox, bear, cougar, opportunity is endless honestly and a lot of states have great hunting laws when it comes to hunting with dogs. Australia is probably the same thing maybe even better laws I don’t know. Work Fox, wild boar, Roo are the main one down there. States has better opportunities for predator hunting with dogs.
LGD I guess anywhere with wolves and bears to really test the dogs. Also anywhere that doesn’t have stupid laws that prevent dogs from staying outside etc(theirs is incredibly ridiculous laws in some places lol….) Some places require lgd to wear giant sticks or bells around their necks, I’m sure that helps the lgd while guarding lol. But now thinking about it Africa would be a great place…. Lots of quarry and beasts to guard against…. Jackals, baboons, will be everywhere. Let the dogs to engage in and I’m sure they will get opportunities to do so possibly some kills under their belts. Hyenas too, leopards, and of course the ultimate test lions. So I guess Africa would be the ultimate test for LGD dogs, just so many predators and animals to guard against. The dogs will garuntee to see plenty of action vs some other places that might see a few coyote in its lifetime. I like kangal or “Anatolian” for the task, maybe some athletic, rangy, Boz shepherd dogs too.
Fighting dogs; Japan because it is legal lol.
PPD dogs anywhere close to a big city I imagine, probably somewhere in the states. But I’m not an expert when it comes to ppd work.

That's a good point about Africa being the best location for LGDs to be "honed" to their highest potential. I just wonder if the culture is really there, or is it just conservation groups doing their best to try and place LGDs with ranchers and just getting by, maybe Africa isn't yet producing LGDs as well as say Turkey is. Not sure.

For fun...

Feral dogs 1. Australia 2. Russia 3. India 4. Brazil 5. Tanzania
This was a hard one as lots of countries are actually "great" in these departments.

Sent from my SM-A105FN using Tapatalk I honestly thought England would win, but those tiers are very deceptive, USA crushed hard. I made a scoring system where you get 5 points for coming first, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, etc down to 1 point for 5th. USA got 47 points. England in second place only got 20, then the others are in the teens and single digits. Mind you I'm not super confident about these scores. I may have just gone USA by default at times.

It's Argentina for sure IMO. The greenies don't like that but I do think Argentina will be the last man standing for hunting with dogs.

Scientific studies have LGDs surviving brutal leopard attacks, bringing down kudu, killing brown hyenas, leopards, killing a lot of jackal and caracal, deer fawns and rabbits... A lot of deaths. Snake bite was also a big deal.
